Description

Gyrossuppe is a quick and easy, hearty soup inspired by classic gyros flavors, combining tender pork or chicken with peppers, tomatoes, cream, and aromatic spices for a rich, comforting meal.


Ingredients

  • 1000 g pork schnitzel (alternatively chicken breast)
  • 1000 ml vegetable broth
  • 400 g whole canned tomatoes
  • 400 g red bell peppers
  • 150 g yellow bell peppers
  • 150 g onions
  • 200 g sour cream (or crème fraîche)
  • 200 g cream (min. 30% fat)
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 chili pepper
  • 8 tsp gyros seasoning (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 tbsp marjoram
  • 1 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 4 tbsp neutral vegetable oil (e.g., rapeseed or sunflower)

Homemade Gyros Seasoning:

  • 3 tsp sweet paprika powder
  • 2 tsp oregano
  • 2 tsp thyme
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin


Instructions

  1. Cut meat into bite-sized pieces.
  2. Heat oil in a large pot and sauté onions, garlic, and chili until fragrant.
  3. Add meat and brown lightly.
  4. Add chopped peppers, canned tomatoes, tomato paste, and vegetable broth. Simmer 15–20 minutes.
  5. Mix sour cream, cream, flour, marjoram, and gyros seasoning in a small bowl, then stir into the soup.
  6. Simmer for another 5–10 minutes until slightly thickened. Season with salt, pepper, and lemon juice.
  7. Serve hot, optionally with fresh parsley or crusty bread.

Notes

  • Use either pork or chicken depending on preference.
  • Adjust spice level by adding more or fewer chili peppers.
